About Sigurd Miedema
I am a counsellor, psychotherapist, and clinical supervisor with over two decades of experience working alongside individuals and communities impacted by trauma, addiction, mental health challenges, and family and domestic violence. I hold a Bachelor of Behavioural Studies (Psychology) and a Master of Counselling, and I am a Level 4 member of the Australian Counselling Association and a member of the ACA College of Supervisors.
Originally from the Netherlands, I immigrated to Australia in 1989 and spent many years in the Kimberley region, including living and working in remote Aboriginal communities. These experiences deepened my appreciation of intergenerational trauma, cultural stressors, and the resilience found in community. I bring this sensitivity and cultural awareness into every therapeutic and supervisory relationship.
I have extensive experience working in therapeutic communities, prisons, and community settings, supporting individuals experiencing complex trauma, comorbid mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, and those navigating recovery from substance use. My work has included men’s behaviour change programs, supporting both those who use violence and those affected by it. I also support clients facing workplace-related stress, vicarious trauma, and burnout—helping professionals to restore balance, process difficult experiences, and reconnect with their sense of purpose. Additionally, I provide relationship counselling to couples and individuals seeking to improve communication, rebuild trust, or navigate the challenges of intimate partnerships.
I am an eclectic practitioner—drawing on a wide range of therapeutic modalities including CBT, narrative therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused approaches, and community-as-method—always grounded in person-centred values. I believe that clients are the experts of their own lives, and my role is to support their growth and insight in a safe, respectful environment.
I’ve also worked as a university lecturer in trauma and addictions counselling, and I am an accredited Train-the-Trainer facilitator in the University of Sydney’s Comorbidity Guidelines. These academic and training roles allow me to bring evidence-based knowledge into practice, especially in my supervision work with early-career and experienced therapists alike.
Now based in Fremantle, I offer counselling and clinical supervision services both in-person and online, with flexible fee structures. I welcome individuals, organisations, and agencies seeking ethical, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive support.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch to see how I can best support you, your organisation, or your team.
